“Tying Vermont History & Tradition in a Knot”

In the mid 1800’s, after a 49er returned from the California Gold Rush and discovered gold nuggets in Buffalo Brook, Plymouth VT, the Vermont Gold Rush was on! While prospectors were panning for gold, Vermont farmers were seeking another type of gold, Maple Gold! In March and April, they tapped trees, hung buckets, and rushed to collect as much sap as possible. After boiling the sap down, the finished product, Maple Syrup, was considered by many to be gold, not only because of the color, but because it is precious and of superior quality just like the metal. Years later the Maple Gold Rush continues on. While innovation has changed the refinement process, Gold Rush Maple Syrup is deeply rooted in tradition as it is produced by a sixth generation sugar-maker in Vermont’s pristine Northeast Kingdom.

The Vermont Gold Rush

Gold nuggets in Vermont? Yes, it’s true!  The first gold nuggets were discovered in 1826 in Newfane and Sumerset, VT. In 1851 a ‘49er, who had just returned from the California Gold Rush, discovered gold in Buffalo Brook in Plymouth, VT. The Gold Rush was on! In the 1880’s, seven gold prospecting companies were operating in Plymouth.  By the end of the 1880’s, operations were shutdown due to high operating costs and not enough gold.  Many would agree that gold mining in Vermont, if your goal is to profit, is most likely not worth the while and that money invested in it will not bring satisfactory returns. But that doesn’t stop the many people, with pioneering spirits, that have continued to prospect for gold in streams and brooks in Vermont.  Rumor has it that some persistent prospectors have gained great wealth over the years from finding gold in VT!

Maple Gold Rush

While the Vermont Gold Rush is long over, there is another iconic Gold Rush that Vermont is famous for. This Gold Rush takes place every year in the U.S. Northeast and Canada, the area unique to a high concentration of sugar maple trees.   Depending on weather, the Gold Rush typically lasts between four to eight weeks during March and April, when people in the maple industry rush to collect millions of gallons of sugar maple sap that rush through tapped tree lines. After boiling the sap down to remove water for the desired sugar content and distinct taste, the finished product, Maple Syrup, is considered by many to be gold. Gold, not only because of the color but because it is precious just like the metal, and of superior quality. A true gift from mother nature.

Healthy as a Tree

Maple Syrup – The original natural sweetener

Legend has it that Native people discovered maple syrup after a chief returning to camp threw a tomahawk at a maple tree and noticed the sap running out which they used to boil venison.

Since then we have discovered how a tree produces the nutritious sap through the process of photosynthesis. Maple tree sap and ultimately maple syrup is not only a natural source of beneficial antioxidants, but also an abundance of naturally occurring minerals, such as: magnesium, potassium, manganese and calcium.

Go For Gold

In history, there have been many gold rushes all over the world, a feverish frenzy bringing opportunity and great fortune to some and disappointment to just as many.  Regardless of the outcome of their findings, one thing that these prospectors had in common was a pioneering spirit, a spirit filled with optimism, ambition, hope and purpose, with one goal in mind, gold!   These people were inspired with purpose and what many realized after they found gold, or didn’t, was that it wasn’t all about finding the gold, it was about the passion and excitement in the journey, it was about believing in something that, at the time, they couldn’t see.

We, at Gold Rush Maple Products, want to honor those pioneering spirited people in the past and present by including encouraging messages in our products.  Whatever your “Gold”(goal) is, Gold Rush Maple Products reminds you that passion fuels life, so be inspired and go for it!
